Project description and objectives

A technological startup from Eastern Europe developed an innovative solution aimed at transforming customer service for telecom operators. The idea was born out of real-life challenges faced by travelers in the GCC, where getting a SIM card or receiving telecom services was often time-consuming due to strict regulations, fingerprint verification, and store closures during prayer times.

The startup envisioned a network of advanced kiosks that combined the convenience of self-service with the human touch of remote agents available via video call. This hybrid approach would have allowed customers to complete identity verification, receive assistance, and access telecom services quickly, even outside standard working hours.

The objective of the project was to introduce the solution to decision-makers across major telecoms in the UAE and Saudi Arabia, attract potential investors, and validate the technology through pilot projects. By targeting regulated and highly competitive markets, the startup also sought to position itself as a valuable partner for regional operators undergoing digital transformation.

Accomplishments

The startup successfully built two working prototypes, which were showcased at both local and international telecom exhibitions.

These presentations attracted significant attention, including that from some of the GCC-based operators, investors, and innovation programs such as Dubai Future Accelerators, where the project reached the final pre-qualification stage.

The project team secured meetings with decision-makers of major telecoms in the UAE and Saudi Arabia.

Some operators expressed strong interest and inquired about specifications, pricing, and deployment possibilities.

The startup also connected with investors who were ready to commit funding once a partnership with a major telecom was secured.

Despite promising discussions, procurement delays and internal priorities at telecom operators created barriers for the startup to secure deals. As a result, the startup pivoted the technology toward other industries such as travel and insurance, where early feedback was positive. Ultimately, a pilot project was agreed on with a travel agency in Eastern Europe, demonstrating the technology's adaptability and potential beyond telecom.

Project objectives met

Connections with decision-makers of major telecoms in the GCC were successfully established.

Several meetings with potential investors were organized.

However, procurement issues prevented the company from participating in regional tenders, which made the project team pivot the technology towards other industries and geographies.

Success criteria met

A pilot project was secured with a travel agency outside the GCC region, proving the viability of the technology.

No commercial deals were finalized in the GCC, but the experience provided valuable market insights and shaped future business strategies.
